The splitter becomes dangerous when it tunnels beneath the fastball, not when it is thrown automatically with two strikes.

He is most useful for players who already trust their starting lineup and routinely reach late innings with narrow leads. Compared with another generic hard thrower, Duran offers a more convincing velocity threat and a sharper change of eye level. Compared with Bellinger, though, his appearances are fewer and his margin for error is smaller.

Take Bellinger unless your lineup is already stacked with reliable left-handed bats, elite defense, and usable first-base depth.
